Saturday, June 12 Update
Another whirlwind week - 96 breakfast burritos were gone in a flash. Word seems to have gotten out and I am seeing more and more regulars. I had a good talk with a guest who wants to come back next week to volunteer and asked for my number so we could coordinate. I’ve had several guests offer to help us and while we sometimes manage to catch up with each other to unload our cars, I haven’t yet had any guests help serve. That’s one of my goals for the summer: to have folks as comfortable helping out behind our table as receiving food in front of it. I’m going to do more advance texting with my volunteer-guests to see if I can make that happen.
This week also had some hard moments. While our amazing volunteers were busy serving our large crowd, I was in my usual spot in front of our table welcoming folks, organizing the line, and handing out cold water. A young man standing next to me was nodding out and almost fell head-first onto the sidewalk. I caught his arm and another guest helped me sit him down against a trash can so he wouldn’t hurt himself. For the next 20 minutes, he was in and out of consciousness, getting up and falling down, as several guests and I tried to get him settled in a safe spot against a wall. He eventually walked off down the street. It was hard to watch and have so little to offer. I hope that I will get to see him another week in better shape.
Stats: 96 breakfast burritos, 40+ bag lunches, 5 gallons mango iced tea, 70 bottles of cold water, and clementines and bananas. We also handed out masks, soap, sanitizer, and toothbrushes and toothpaste.
