Saturday, Apr. 17 Update
Was there something in the air this week? I heard even more heartfelt thank you’s than usual, but also heard more stories of struggle as well. Things felt cracked open. I’m officially on hugging terms now with one of my favorite regulars, which is happy news. But a new guest (after teasing us a bit about whether or not my soup was good-- spoiler alert: it was!) came back to tell me privately how much he appreciated talking with us because he was lonely, depressed, and felt forgotten by his family. I hugged him too.
After doing this outreach for almost 9 months now, our purpose is becoming more clear. We can’t fix everything. We can’t help everyone. There are lots of organizations providing lots of services out there on a larger scale. But what my fantastic fellow volunteers and I can do is show up with love. And with your help, that’s what we do and will keep doing, every Saturday at noon: www.loveancornbread.org/volunteer.
Stats: 42 servings of chicken, rice, and greens soup with cornbread, 2 gallons of hot coffee, and 48 bottles of water. We handed out 40+ bag lunches and wellness kits as well as 100 masks and 50 mini sanitizers.
